Lorna: Well these labourite councillor tossers will do anything to wreck traditional British values. Like when a University used to stand as a mighty academic establishment, not a grotty little concrete polytechnic in some provincial backwater.

Incidentally, St. David's in Wales is not much bigger than a village, but it has a cathedral, and so is the smallest city in Britain. As for places like Birmingham and Leeds are just sh!tholes, and really don't deserve it.

'The definition of a city is it has to have a cathedral.' RobN

Actually that's not true anymore. Reading has been trying for years to get city status. That would mean that Reading can try without having an Anglican cathedral. There are others Birmingham and Leeds being a couple there are 18 cities without Anglian Catherdrals.

http://www.lovemytown.co.uk/Cathedrals/CathedralsTable3.asp will tell you more.

AngieRS: I was waiting for some pedant to pipe up with this one. The definition of a city is it has to have a cathedral. Unless there's one up some back alley behind St. James' St, I'd say they haven't got one, so whatever their stuck-up pretentious council want to call it, it's still a town.

So ner.

I used to live in Second Avenue in Hove but wooped it up in Brighton. I met my Life-Partner there and we still make sweet music!

In 1997 Brighton and Hove were joined to form the unitary authority of Brighton and Hove, which was granted city status by Queen Elizabeth II as part of the millennium celebrations in 2000.

God, took them long enough to come up with that one. Hopefully this can only mean that Brighton Pride won't get the same issues they got last year and will secure Brighton Pride for the future.

Well if the council wants to promote the town (yes, it's a town, not a city), it should fund Gay Pride, and not offer pokey cheapskate loans.
